One of the major benefits of the exercises we do off the horse is that they really help us become aware of areas of tension and tightness in our body. We learn how it feels to release these areas of tightness through our breathing and releases. That awareness will carry over into our riding.
Skilled riders have a really highly tuned awareness of their own body (and their horses body) they really notice if they’re carrying tension or tightness in certain areas and they’re able to release it. The exercises on the mat are such a great way to hone our skills so we can become better riders for our horses. So next time you practice make sure to leave any baggage at the door. Don’t run through the movements mindlessly but really tune in and feel your body. Your awareness will improve. Just keep showing up.
